Description | |
Abstract | This project develops a strategy for the implementation of a Mediterranean Forecasting System aimed at the prediction of the coastal fluctuations in biogeochemical cycles, from the time scales of days to months. Such a predictive capability is required to sustain a healthy coastal environment and its management. A forecasting system of this kind requires two essential parts:
- an observing system
- a numerical modelling component that can use the past observational information to optimally initialise the forecast
A major goal of the project is to show that Near Real Time forecasts of the large-scale basin currents are possible.
The Project is subdivided into nine Work packages, which are:
WP 1- Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) temperature data collection;
WP 2- Mediterranean Multisensor Moored Array (M3A);
WP 3- Near Real Time remotely sensed data collection and analysis;
WP 4- Ocean Data assimilation and impact of atmospheric coupling and oceanic data strategy;
WP 5- Numerical Forecasting Experiments during TOP;
WP 6- High Resolution simulations in the coastal and shelf areas with nested model implementation;
WP 7- Ecosystem model validation and hindcast;
WP 8- Data management;
WP 9- Dissemination and exploitation of results
NCMR has the responsibility for the development of the M3A system (WP 2), and participates in the VOS system (WP 1) and the modelling component of the project (WP 6). |
