IRD is present in the French West Indies since 1960. Research programs successively developed in various fields: hydrology and pedology (1960), demography (1976), economy (1977), sociology (1978), anthropology 1980), nutrition (1980), microbiology (1982), oceanography (1985), nematology (1987), biology and organization of the tropical grounds (1988), medical entomology (1990), linguistics and education (2000).

Three laboratories are currently represented in Martinique: Social Nematology, Pedology, Sciences.

Other activities lie within the scope of collegial expertises, of direction of theses or support to networks.
