organisation profile

The Italian National Research Council (CNR) is a public organisation with general scientific competence and with scientific research institutes distributed over Italy, which carries out activity of primary interest for the promotion of science and the progress of the Country. CNR has been recently reorganised and the laboratories working on marine science have been grouped in two main Institutes. Istituto per lo Studio del Mare - ISMAR is grouping the sections of La Spezia, Bologna, Venice, Trieste, Ancona and Lesina. The activities range from physical oceanography, to chemistry, biology and sedimentology.

The Sezione di Venezia of Istituto di Scienze Marine is the former Istituto di Biologia Marina. Together with the former Istituto per lo Studio della Dinamica delle Grandi Masse is now constituting the Venice section of ISMAR. The Institute operates in the field of biological and descriptive oceanography. The main activities and research topics are in the field of descriptive oceanography, hydrochemistry, primary production dynamics, optical properties, phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology, suspended matter and sediment studies, pollution studies and their physiological effects, aquaculture and genetics. Scientific programs have been carried out in the lagoon of Venice, Northern Adriatic Sea, Southern Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and Antarctica. The methodological approach includes:

  • standard and special data collection and sampling procedures;
  • management and processing of measured data;
  • data interpretation.

The data held by the Institute are subject to different availability. The data collected in the framework of scientific programmes can be exchanged on a bilateral basis, or by special arrangement with the scientists involved in their original collection. Other data, particularly those collected on behalf of research contracts, are of restricted availability awaiting final clearance by the contractor.

The CNR/National Council Research established the Institute for the Study of the Dynamics of Large Masses (ISDGM) in 1969. Its activity is multidisciplinary, from basic research in oceanography and geology to applied research.
The oceanographic division carries out research principally in physical oceanography over a wide range of scales. The areas of major interest are Venice lagoon, Adriatic sea, Mediterranean sea, and the Ross sea in Antarctica."
