The Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research, Utrecht University (IMAU) was established on 24 September 1991 as a university research institute. It is based in the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, with a significant contribution from the Faculty of Geosciences.
The study of climate change and possible implications for mankind is one field in which fundamental knowledge of the oceans and the atmosphere is applied. The mission of the IMAU is to contribute to the basic science of the oceans, atmosphere and cryosphere. To achieve this we try to maintain an open and stimulating research environment in which students and staff are inspired to give their best.
The research and teaching programme is built around five themes: (1) Ice and climate, (2) Ocean circulation and climate, (3) Atmospheric physics and chemistry, (4) Atmospheric dynamics and boundary-layer meteorology, and (5) Physical geography and oceanography of the coastal zone. To some extent, this partition is arbitrary and many projects go across these themes.
There are about 15 staff members available to run the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes and to carry out research projects. Head of the Institute is the scientific director assisted by the manager. The support staff consists of secretaries, technicians and computer/software specialists. They provide good working conditions and excellent computing facilities.
Through the years, the IMAU has been successful in acquiring funds from outside the university, notably from NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research), SRON (Space Research Organization Netherlands), RIKZ (National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management) and the European Union. With these funds a large number of Ph.D.-students and post-docs, in recent years about 50 on average, is employed.
Our research has a strong international orientation, as witnessed by participation in international field campaigns and modelling studies. IMAU staff members have made significant contributions (lead authors and contributing authors) to the IPCC Assessments on climate change.
More and more foreign students come to participate in our Master and Ph.D. Programme. They discover that we offer a wide range of first-class courses, and they also find out that Utrecht is a very nice town to spend some time. We are pleased with this development and encourage potential students to inquire about the possibilities.
