organisation profile
UPML is an integral part of the Institute of Marine Science which is hosted by the School of Biological Sciences within the University and provides basic facilities for both marine biology teaching and research.
The research interests of the staff associated with the laboratory embrace fouling organisms and biofouling prevention; introduced ('alien') marine organisms; the macrofauna of both rocky and depositing shores; taxonomy and distribution of macroalgae; eutrophication processes; macroalgae of potential commercial importance and fisheries biology.
The staff of the laboratory are called upon to make environmental impact surveys and to monitor the incidence of organisms in marinas, dockyards etc.
Phycologists at the laboratory maintain an extensive herbarium, both dry and liquid preserved, which is available for study and loan. Considerable data within the above areas of interest are available at the laboratory in the form of final year undergraduate projects, postgraduate theses and official reports prepared for outside bodies.
