organisation profile

The Marine Meteorology Branch (MMB) of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) is responsible for the marine meteorological observations in Greece. Out of a permanent network of 35 coastal meteorological stations, sea surface temperature measurements are made at two of them. Observations at these two stations are taken 3 times a day (06:00,12:00,18:00). Data of 20 of these stations (international) are transmitted through the Global Telecommunication System (GTS). Furthermore, there is one land earth station (Thermopylae - INMARSAT-C Service) which accept meteorological reports from ships (VOS). These reports are subsequently transmitted to the HNMS and GTS. The HNMS has developed a mathematical model for the Mediterranean sea, which is used for the preparation of wave forecasts for 30-48 hours. The data holdings of the HNMS are currently visual wave data for the past 20 years stored on manuscript forms (hard copy). Also data for the past 30 years from 2 marine meteorological stations (Piraeus harbour, Naxos Island) stored on catalogues.
