organisation profile

The Central Laboratory of General Ecology (CLGE) was established on January 01, 1996, as a successor of the National Co-ordination Center of Ecology and Environmental Protection (1956-1989) and later - of the Institute of Ecology (1989-1995) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. As an Academic institution, CLGE is autonomous scientific body for research development and post-graduate education, supported partially by the state budget. The main scope of its activities is development and implementation of projects in the field of general and applied ecology and environmental protection, including Bio-Cenology & Ecological Modeling, Bio-Diversity & Nature Conservation, and Bio-Monitoring & Environmental Risks Assessment. The activities cover large scale of natural and man-made ecosystems and habitats of all kinds (marine, freshwater, terrestrial, forest, agrosystems, etc.). CLGE applies various methodical approaches and numerous methods for studying the environmental and ecological issues and problems. The Laboratory of Marine Ecology is a field station of the Central Lab of General Ecology. It is based in the town of Sozopol just on the coast of the Black Sea. Laboratory of general ecological investigation, chemical-analytical laboratory, instrumental lab, radio-isotopic lab, a workshop, stores and a kitchen are situated on 230 m2. The basic scientific instrumentation comprises a spectrophotometer and the corresponding devices for water analyzes; Oxy-meter and pH meter; microscopes and devices for phytoplankton and microbiologycal investigations; luminometer; liquid-scintillation counter for radio-isotopic measurements. There is a microcozm construction for investigations of water/sediment interactions. In combination with the techniques applied in the Lab the fluxes of oxygen, organic carbon, nutrients through the water/sediment interface can be measured both in undisturbed and polluted environment. In the coastal zone mezocoozm constructions (50-200 l) can be used in investigations of the impact of different nutrients and other substances on the planktonic community. The main measurements (techniques/analyses) used in the Lab are: -Abiotic parameters of the environment: temperature, wind, oxygen concentration, concentrations of NH4, NO2, NO3, PO4, Ntot, Norg, Corg in sediment; -Functional parameters of the planktonic community: primary production, heterotrophic uptake of glucose, amino-acids, carbonic acids and other substrates of glucose, amino-acids, carbonic acids and other substrates; -Functional parameters of the soft bottom: Organic carbon mineralization, mineralization of glucose, amino-acids, carbonic acids and other substrates.
