organisation profile

The research group Aquatic Ecology (AECO) has more than twenty years of experience with physical-chemical as well as biological monitoring and assessment of surface waters. Research has been focussing on water quality monitoring, development of biological assessment methods for rivers and lakes and integrated ecological river basin management. AECO also looks into the functioning and application of constructed wetlands and other natural systems for wastewater treatment. The research group played a leading role in the development of assessment systems based on macro-invertebrates (Belgian Biotic Index, BBI ; Biotic Sediment Index, BSI ; Mentum Deformations of Chironomids), methods that are nowadays applied by the Flemish Environmental Agency as standardized assessment tools for the Flemish rivers. Recently, the development and validation of an Index of Biotic Integrity based on fish communities is also part of the research. During the last years, attention is also paid to the development of ecological models to improve the development of integrated river assessment systems to allow a sound validation and interpretation of these score systems.
