Institute (founded in 1926) is the oldest geological institution in Ukraine.  Here the most of basic branches of Earth sciences were developed. Principal study field includes investigations of geological structure and evolution of the territory of Ukraine as well as adjacent areas, coordination of regional geological survey, participation in international geological programs and projects.
119 PhDs are working in the Institutes’ staff. It includes the Center of the Aerospace Sensing of the Earth, the Center of the Management and Marketing in the Field of Earth Sciences; 4 specialized commission on the doctoral thesis; post-graduate courses. The Institute is the founder of Ukrainian Paleontological Society and Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee of Ukraine. It edits “Geological Journal”; members of institutes’ staff are Editors-in Chief and members of Editorial Board of journals “Ecology of environment and safety of life”, “Geoinformatics” etc. The Institutes’ library is the richest geological one in Ukraine.
The main trends of research are concentrated on the multidisciplinary works on the problems of geological sciences, solving actual problems in natural resources of Ukraine (such as fuel, water and other mineral resources) scientific basis of environment protection and improvement and efficient utility of natural resources.
The Institute made a significant contribution in general geology, paleontology, paleobotany, stratigraphy, geotectonics, lithology, marine geology, geology of oil, gas, and coal, hydrogeology, geoecology.
Geological problems of the World Ocean are subjects for the Branch of lithology, geology of Seas and Oceans. It’s topics are the next: research of the Earth crust structure in oceans and seas, determination of the processes governing formation accumulations of ore and non-metallic raw and source materials, hydrocarbons, examination of morphology, morphometry and dynamics of sedimentation in submarine canyons, studies concerning the geological aspects of bioproductiv zone formation, examination of the Black Sea's gas hydrates and their practical use, research into biostratigraphy of shelf and bottom sediments, geoecological studies of floores of the Black Sea and the sea of Azov; development of approaches to conservation and improvement of environment.
