In this context, it corresponds to the Directorate General of Fisheries Management to support innovation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
For the development of activities related to research and innovation, the General Secretariat of the Sea has three research vessels that carry out campaigns to improve the knowledge of the marine ecosystem, monitoring the status of resources, identification of vulnerable ecosystems, etc.
Related to the knowledge of marine ecosystems, a unique project called ESPACE is being developed since 1999. The purpose of this project is the systematic mapping of the Spanish continental shelf. 2 million hectares have been mapped up to now, constituting the largest homogeneous mapping database of the Spanish seafloor. The General Structural Policy Branch is responsible of the project management.
