organisation profile
- The MIO is the result of the merger of the COM (Centre of Oceanology of Marseille), itself composed of the LOPB, the LMGEM and a part of the DIMAR, the LSEET, the LMBEC and a researcher from the IRPHE. This laboratory was established on 01/01/2012.
The MIO is a component of the Observatory of Sciences of the Universe (OSU) Institute Pytheas with the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Marseille (LAM), the European Centre for Research and Higher Education of Earth Sciences (CEREGE) and the Mediterranean Institute of Marine and Continental Ecology and Biodiversity (IMBE).The MIO is a laboratory of Oceanology, which conducts its research in international scientific programs, it is involved in the NoE Euroceans. Overall, the goals of research aimed at better understanding and modeling ocean circulation and the functioning of marine ecosystems. The MIO research is based on Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Fisheries, Physics, Chemistry, Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology skills. The MIO research interests include response of marine ecosystems and ocean circulation to global change (in terms of climate and contaminant inputs).
The MIO is composed of five research teams:
- Team 1 - Physical Oceanography, Coastal and Littoral (OPLC)
- Team 2 - Environmental Chemistry (EC) Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Optical Marines
- Team 3 - Environmental Microbiology Biotechnology (SEM)
- Team 4 - BiogEochemical CYcles of assembly and functional roLE planktonic microorganisms: CYBELE
- Team 5 - Marine Ecology and Biodiversity (EMBIO)The MIO will ensure the specific mission of the OSU Marine Observatory Institute Pytheas.
