The University of Hamburg (Universität Hamburg, UHH) is one of Germany's younger universities. Its founding was not documented in some provincial foundation charter but in a sober official announcement issued by the Free and Hanseatic City on 1 April 1919.

Research profile

The University of Hamburg is the largest research and educational institution in northern Germany. As Germany's third biggest university, UHH offers a diverse course range and excellent research options.

The University has established numerous research foci as well as an extensive partner network with leading institutions on a regional, national and international scale.

UHH is a sustainable university. It is committed to sustainable research. All of the schools have taken great strides towards sustainability in research and teaching.

Clusters of excellence

In 2007 Universität Hamburg implemented its cluster of excellence in climate research as part of Germany's Excellence Initiative: KlimaCampus Hamburg provides a competence and training center for climate research and earth system sciences.

In 2012 Universität Hamburg received funding for an additional cluster of excellence: the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI): Structure, Dynamics and Control of Matter at the Atomic Scale. The CUI focuses on the real-time observation of atomic motions.

Research foci

In addition to climate, earth, and environment our key research areas comprise: matter and the universe, neurosciences, multilingualism, governance, heterogeneity and education, as well as infection research and structural biology.

In accordance with its Structure and Development Plan (STEP; PDF, in German only) Universität Hamburg dedicates itself to combining selected research areas with a broad spectrum of courses.
