organisation profile
- Leipzig University was founded in 1409, making it one of the oldest universities in Germany. On its ambitious path to becoming a top-level European university and internationally recognised seat of research and learning for young scholars, the University draws on an extensive range of subject areas. The university embraces the tradition of crossing boundaries and strives for interdisciplinary cooperation extending beyond single subject areas and institute boundaries to live up to its standard in research and teaching. The motto of its institutional strategy - ‘Leipzig: Human Living Conditions. Diversity and Dynamics’ - reflects the university’s research focus as well as the attractiveness of Leipzig as a location.

The dynamic and focused promotion of excellent research areas, interdisciplinary research initiatives and young academics fortifies the comprehensive university as a whole and puts it on track for the future. The University is just as dedicated to pure research as it is to promoting the responsible use of research findings, transferring knowledge, and cooperating with non-university institutions.
Four main processes have shaped the most recent research-oriented development of Leipzig University:- The University has raised its profile by forming Top-Level Research Areas where scholars from various faculties of the university collaborate closely with non-university research institutions.
- The Research Academy Leipzig has been setting the pace by linking internationally competitive research with attractive doctoral training.
- The Leipzig Research Forum was set up to forge a joint consultation committee that promotes and co-ordinates long-term liaising between universities and non-university research institutions in Leipzig.
- The participation in the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments has led to increased focus on and promotion of top-level research.
