organisation profile

The Canadian Ice Service, a division of the Meteorological Service of Canada, Environment Canada, is the leading authority for information about ice in Canada's navigable waters. Its mission is to provide the most accurate and timely information about ice in Canada's navigable waters. It works to promote safe and efficient maritime operations and to help protect Canada's environment.

The Canadian Ice Service Archive includes data in various forms:

  • Ice and iceberg charts in several types of media (paper, microfilm, and digital formats);
  • A large collection of aircraft and satellite imagery; and
  • Bulletins and other text documents.

 History

The Canadian Ice Services' origin is the Sea Ice Central Office of the Royal Canadian Navy, which was operated by staff from the Meteorological Branch of the Department of Transport. The office was located at the Canadian Forces Base HMCS Shearwater (near Halifax, NS), inaugurated in 1958.

In 1971 the Ice Central moved to Ottawa (473 Albert St.) where there could be immediate interactions with the Coast Guard. By then, the Department of Environment (aka Environment Canada) was created and the former Meteorological Branch of the Department of Transport was transferred as the Atmospheric Environment Service, with the Ice Central section underneath.

In 1982 the Ice Central's mandate expanded further. It was reorganized as "Ice Centre" and moved to a new location in Ottawa (365 Laurier W.). Together with two other divisions located in Toronto, it made up the "Ice Branch" of Environment Canada.

The Centre moved to its current location towards the end of the decade. In 1999 a major restructuration at Environment Canada had the Atmospheric Environment Service becoming the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC), and the Ice branch as the Marine and Ices Services, and later as the Canadian Ice Service underneath it.
