Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection is a central governmental authority. The origin of the work of the Inspection of Environmental Protection dates back to September 1980. In the 1990s, the principles of conducting inspections, as well as measurement technologies, were standardized for the entire country. The inspectorates were equipped with laboratories, and the National Environmental Monitoring Programme was implemented. Since 1998, the Chief Inspectorate supervises 16 voivodship inspectorates which run all together 34 branches in various cities throughout the country. The role of the Inspection of Environmental Protection is to control the implementation of environmental regulations, as well as to continuously monitor quality, assess and prepare outlook concerning the state of the environment and its changes.

The Chief Inspectorate controls compliance with environmental protection regulations, examines the state of the environment under the programme of the National Environmental Monitoring, implements precautionary measures to prevent major accidents, prevents illegal transboundary waste shipment.
