organisation profile
The Centro de Geofisica da Universidade de Lisboa is the leading group in Portugal in geophysical research. The skills of its staff and associated investigators cover a wide range of geophysical and geological applications particularly relevant to this project. The group made an important contribution to the ILIHA project (under EC) both on the deep seismic sounding and surface wave experiments. Several studies on the seismicity of Portugal mainland and the Azores area were produced in the past and since 1991 the group has acquired expertise in OBS (ocean bottom seismographs) technology and has developed a real-time, satellite connected OBS remote station to monitor the activity of the seismically active zone of Gorringe Bank, to be deployed early 1991.
The group is also involved in the STREAMERS/IAM project (under EC) which is directed to the study of the deep geology of the Atlantic Margin offshore Iberia using high-energy vertical and wide-angle incidence seismic reflection methods. Recently the CGUL group has been operating a VBB digital seismic station at Evora consisting of a Streckelsen VBB seismometer and acquisition system linked to a 20bit digital recording system from IPG Strasbourg. This station will soon be integrated in the GEOSCOPE digital network giving access to a large amount of digital data from teleseismic events recorded worldwide. During the last decade the Centro de Geofisica has developed a geophysical laboratory with the most up-to-date acquisition equipment for seismic methods, and developed in-house software for geophysical data processing comprising, in particular, seismic refraction and surface wave analysis.
