The Guia Marine Laboratory (LMG) is a Research and Development Unit belonging to the Faculty of Sciences (Department of Zoology and Anthropology) of the University of Lisbon. The Guia Marine Laboratory is also a member of IMAR- Institute of Marine Research. It has presently a permanent staff of nine Professors at the same University. A total of about 30 researchers work in the Laboratory. This number varies from year to year since about two thirds are students or post-graduate students finishing their thesis (Degree, Master or Doctorate). This Unit also cooperates with the European network for University interchange students ERASMUS. Graduate and Post-Graduate scholarships are offered on a regular basis especially in connection with ongoing Research and Development Projects in ACP countries.
The main research effort is concerned with Marine Ecology (Coastal and Deep-Sea Systems) and Marine Ecophysiology (Physiology of growth, nutrition and reproduction of marine species). The permanent staff of the Laboratory is also involved in lecturing at the Department of Zoology and Anthropology (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon). Several courses related to Marine Sciences are offered (e.g. Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Ichthyology, Marine Resources, Estuarine Ecology, Remote Sensing, Ecophysiology of Marine Animals, Aquaculture).
