organisation profile

Stockholm Marine Research Centre (SMF) is one of three marine centres in Sweden. The marine centres in Sweden are responsible for Research, Education, Environmental monitoring and Information within their respective area of responsibility. One of SMF's main tasks is, together with responsible authorities, to take part in scientific design of environmental control programmes for the Baltic Proper and, by order of the same authorities, to do measurements, sampling and other environmental control measures. The Swedish EPA is responsible for planning and operating national environmental monitoring. The national monitoring programme consists of ten different areas. Within the programme are SEA, SMF and other two centres are responsible for a number of sub-programmes.

SMF publishes annual reports with results from marine surveillance of the Baltic Proper. SMF is also one of the financiers behind the database BED (Baltic Ecosystem Database). It is a research related database that contains data on climate, runoff and hydrology and chemical data of water and sediments in the Baltic Sea. DAS (Data Assimilation System) has been linked to BED to be able to do graphical presentation and analysis of data. SMF is elected by the Swedish EPA as data host for the BIOlogical MArine Database BIOMAD. The database consists of monitoring data and covers the entire coastal and sea areas of Sweden. The sub-programmes within the programme area SEA that are presented in the database are: Benthic fauna, The reproduction of Monoporeia, Phytobenthos, The Pelagic (only phyto and zooplankton, for hydrography and nutrients see SMHI), and Marine top consumers (development of populations and health conditions).
