Umea Marine Sciences Centre (UMF) is one of three marine centres in Sweden. UMF is open to researchers from all over the world who would like to do research in the Gulf of Bothnia. UMF is also responsible for environmental monitoring as well as for spreading information about research and research findings. UMF is part of the University of Umea, and is governed by a board consisting of representatives from the Swedish Governement, the Swedish National Science Research Council, the National Swedish Environment Protection Board, and Umea University.
UMF conducts environmental monitoring at the request of government agencies. UMF execute parts of the national environmental monitoring programme. This is done at request of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. UMF evalute and compile data in an annual report of environmental status in the Gulf of Bothnia. UMF cooperates with county councils along the coast in running regional monitoring programmes. UMF conducts approximately 20 environmental monitoring expeditions each year. Benthic fauna is sampled in a programme which joins the national and regional monitoring programmes. As a result of the national marine environmental monitoring programme UMF publishes an annual report on the status of the marine environment in the Gulf of Bothnia. The report contains a survey of the last year as well as articles on topics of current interest.
