IMEDEA is a joint research center jointly governed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) . The main character of the IMEDEA is to emphasize the Interdisciplinary approaches to scientific research.

The mission of IMEDEA is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in critical areas in order to improve the living standards of the Balearic society. This general goal is being achieved through scientific research characterized by a global scope, which is only achievable through an interdisciplinary approach. It pursues scientific excellence in the different scientific areas included in the IMEDEA.

The Institute is divided into two departments (Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Natural Resources) and other independent research lines.
