The Danube Delta National Institute was created in 1970 with the aim of carrying out fundamental and applied research to provide scientific grounding for the management of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR) and wetlands of national and international importance for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, including studies on ecological restoration. The Research Department is responsible for providing the scientific basis for formulating and implementing governmental policy and strategies on conservation and management of nature and natural resources in DDBR areas.

This Department has 138 employees, including 37 specialised researchers in different fields such as environment, environment engineering, biology, GIS and remote sensing.
