Fisheries Research Laboratory was founded in 1993. It is the branch of Fish Resource Department of Lithuanian State Pisciculture and Fisheries Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania.
Performance of research of fish resources in Lithuanian economic zone and supply of data to ICES, IBSFC are the main tasks of the laboratory.
According to data quota of annual catches of commercial fish resources are determined. Laboratory has been submitting recommendations for fishery policy development, amendments for regulation of commercial fishery have been recommended.
Other activities of Laboratory are:
- Monitoring of the main commercial fish abundance and biomass in the Baltic Sea coastal waters and open sea, as well as monitoring of the main parameters of population as age, sex ratio, spawning time, etc. (1994-2004);
- Monitoring of coastal fishery (since 1993);
- Monitoring of juveniles of commercial fish in coastal zone (since 1995);
- Ichtiological monitoring in the sludge dump area and by the oil pump buoy of Butinge oil terminal (1998-2004);
- Monitoring of parasites causing external dermatosis of commercial fish and other multicellular infective ones (1998-2003 m.);
- Monitoring of coastal fishery impact of newcomer crustaceans (2000-2003 m.).
