The Istituto di Geochimica dei Fluidi (IGF) - Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, among its other activities, carries out geothermal research and geochemical surveillance of volcanic activity. Studies in the marine environment allowed the Institute to acquire data and information regarding submarine manifestations of volcanic and geothermal natures in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, in particular, in the Archipelago of the Aeolian Islands, where attention was focused on the growing volcanic activity on the island of Vulcano. The research in the Aeolian Islands was oriented towards singling out, characterizing and evaluating the submarine emission of fluids within a geochemical-volcanological context. Useful equipment and techniques were developed by the researchers. These include special diving equipment and techniques useful for work up to a depth of 50m.
