The Department of Marine Ecology (ME) started in 1997 bringing together the University of Gothenburg employees at the two marine reserach laboratories Kristineberg Marine Research Station and Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory. In 2002 the unit of Marine Botany (at the Botany Department) merged with the Department of Marine Ecology.
Today the Department have around 90 persons including researchers, teachers, and PhD students. The distribution of staff categories 2010 are shown in the figure below.
The Department of Marine Ecology is well represented at the three geographical locations, the marine research laboratories Kristineberg and Tjärnö and in Gothenburg, with 25-40 persons per location.
