The Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes (HSR) was founded in the period 1934-1936. It belongs to the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), operating as an integral research unit of the latter and hosts an Aquarium and a small sea-life Museum.
The HSR realize several research and educational programs (aquatic biology, coastal monitoring, general husbandry of hosted marine organisms, general oceanographic research, environmental conservation, professional training, environmental education) concerning the marine and inland waters environments. The Station relays on its sufficiently equipped facilities, on the experience and know-how of its research stuff and of course on the full scientific support of HCMR's various Institutes.
Moreover, the HSR maintains close collaboration with other research and educational Centres and Institutes in Greece and on abroad, exchanging know-how, experience and scientific data.
The HSR's Aquarium, is unique in its layout and natural decoration. It hosts a great variety of Mediterranean invertebrate and vertebrate marine species. Sea-mammals, large fish and other Mediterranean marine organisms in addition to a collection of oceanographic instruments are exhibited in the HSR's sea-life Museum.
