- Shelf Sea Ecology - Biologische Anstalt Helgoland
Research and Teaching in the Middle of the Sea
The analysis of the Helgoland ecological long term data series has shown that the ecosystem of the North Sea is in a state of transition caused by global developments; particularly associated with the average water temperature increase of 1.1 °C over the last 40 years. Our mission is to investigate the functional biodiversity of the North Sea shelf seas, i.e. to better understand the functioning of the ecosystem and the role of species and communities in perhaps rapidly changing foodwebs. Experimental studies and the use of complex analytical techniques allow us to develop scenarios to create a basis for explanatory models. Internal and external co-operations support our multidisciplinary approach.
Ultimately we deliver important information for sustainable shelf seas management. The transfer of our research techniques and results into teaching and training is an equally important function of our institute. Guest research at the BAH is a pivotal interface for scientific exchange.
