organisation profile
The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, GEUS, is a research and advisory institute in the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy. GEUS' main tasks are geological mapping, data collection and storage, to carry out research projects, to give advice, and to disseminate geoscientific knowledge. Furthermore, GEUS supports administrative and legislative work in Danish Ministries and the Greenland Home Rule Authority, by providing state-of-the-art geo-scientific knowledge of international standard. GEUS has 9 research departments and 2 administrative/service departments. Science work takes place under 5 programme areas: Databanks and Information, Water Resources, Energy Resources, Mineral resources and Greenland mapping, and Nature and Environment.
GEUS co-operates with numerous scientific institutions and networks, and other organisations around the world, such as Danish and Greenland research institutions and agencies, EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), the Forum of European Geological Surveys (FOREGS) and the European Environmental Agency (EEA).
The Act concerning the use of the Danish subsurface states that all data acquired during activities in the Danish subsurface must be forwarded to the GEUS. This makes GEUS the national databank for all types of data from the Danish subsurface. Due to an agreement with the Greenland Home Rule Government all data from activities in Greenland are stored in the GEUS databank.
Due to Danish legislation all new water supply-related wells and wells relating to exploitation of raw materials must be reported to GEUS. These geological, hydrological, geotechnical and administrative data are stored in the GEUS archive. The well record archives contain about 290,000 wells. A well database contains digital information from about 240,000 wells.
