organisation profile
The Tay Estuary Research Centre (TERC) is a small multidisciplinary service department of the University of Dundee providing equipment and facilities for work on sea, estuary, river and loch. Established in 1966, the Centre is located 10km from the North Sea at Newport Pier, Fife, where boats may berth at all states of the tide. Research is principally carried out by staff and students from the Departments of Geography, Electronic Engineering and Physics, Civil Engineering and Biological Sciences. This includes studies of fluvial, estuarine, lacustrine and reservoir sedimentation, harbour siltation and problems of coastal erosion. TERC maintains close co-operation with national research institutes, industry, local authorities and workers in other universities around the world. Complementing the research programme, many commissioned investigations for local authorities and industrial organisations are undertaken by personnel from TERC. An internal report series (Tay Estuary Research Centre Research Reports) is published occasionally.
TERC also publishes navigation charts of the Upper Tay Estuary, landward of the Tay Railway Bridge. All requests for data should be made through the Hon. Director. Charges may be applied. Some of the data held by TERC are either confidential or of restricted availability. A leaflet further describing TERC's activities is obtainable from the Hon. Director.
