Faculty of Geography and Earth sciences is organized in three departments – Geography, Geology and Environmental Sciences. Department of Geology is organised in two chairs (Bedrock Geology and Applied Geology) and three study and research Laboratories (Rocks, Quaternary geology and Engineering Geology). All Faculty departments are involved in geological studies – Geography (Geomatics, Quaternary geology and geomorphology), Environmental Sciences (Marine Coastal studies, pollution) Geology (broad spectrum of studies from palaeontology to geodynamics, including geochemistry, marine sedimentation etc.).
University of Latvia as state established entity in deep cooperate with other national authorities and agencies, including The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Agency (LEGMA). Therefore data and archives of LEGMA traditionally are available for UL research activities, moreover because significant part of data originally was gathered by researchers of UL including:
- Marine geological surveys in the Latvian sector of the Baltic Sea; the Latvian territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has regarding to the geology been mapped in detail (scale 1:200,000) and at a reconnaissance scale (1:500,000, 1:1,000,000);
- Geomorphology, morphodynamics, lithodynamics and geochemistry in the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea;
- Geotechnical investigations, coastal monitoring and protection;
- Earlier obtained CDP seismic data reprocessing and interpretation;
- Establishment of the marine geological database for the Baltic Sea.
