organisation profile
The Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) is one of eleven federal scientific estabishments (FSE) in Belgium. As a scientific research institute dedicated to Africa, it occupies an important position on the international scene.
The Museum is home to some truly remarkable collections.
Its collection of ethnographic objects from Central Africa is in fact the only one of its kind in the world.
It also has in its keeping the entire archives of Henry Morton Stanley which are of great historical value. The Museum has a film library and a photographic library and a large collection of maps and geological data.
Its zoology collection features a large number of type specimens of African fauna, while the Entomology Section boasts some six million insects.
Scientists also have access to a magnificent collection of tropical wood, which is now the largest in Europe. Making these collections more accessible through digitalisation is one of the major undertaking of the Museum.
The Scientific research Institute employs around 75 scientists active in the fields of cultural anthropology, zoology, geology, history and agriculture and forest economy.
In parallel with the research work, the scientific sections also offer various services. Each year, some one hundred students are given assistance in preparing their theses. Researchers can attend seminars, workshops and individual training courses.
Various databases are available to the public. For example, Metafro InfoSys manages a sizeable on-line database which provides information on documentary sources concerning Central Africa. In addition to a vast library, the RMCA has a documentation centre specialising in fields such as biodiversity, human sciences and geology.
For over a century, the Museum’s scientists preserved and managed our remarkable collections, while conducting their scientific research and disseminating this knowledge among the general public.
