: According to the Decision of the Government of the Ukrainian SSR, on May 1, 1932 Kharkov Engineering Hydrometeorological Institute was founded in the city of Kharkov that was the capital of Ukraine then. On July 4, 1944 Kharkov Engineering Hydrometeorological Institute was moved to Odessa and was given the name of Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute (OHMI). Odessa State Environmental University was organized on its basis on August 9, 2001. The process of education is carried out by nearly 220 lecturers, 80% of them with academic degree and status, and 20% of them being Doctors of Science, Professors, and Members of Academy. The most powerful scientific potential of Ukraine in the field of environmental monitoring and protection is accumulated in the University. The scientists of the University made a considerable contribution to development of hydrometeorological and ecological sciences and education in Ukraine. Computer facility, training laboratories with up-to-date electronic hydrometeorological devices and automatic equipment for monitoring of the environmental state, as well as personal computers, are used in the University to provide educational process and scientific research. There are training departments of meteorological and hydrological forecasts, a training department of receiving and processing satellite information, scientific and training experimental centres at the river Dniester and on the Black Sea coast.
