- CAMBIO (Centre of Applied Marine Biotechnology) is an industry-led, applied research centre, based at Letterkenny Institute of Technology and funded through a mixture of national (Enterprise Ireland) and European programmes.
CAMBIO's research interests lie in marine biotechnology. Specific interests include aquaculture, marine biodiscovery, marine food processing and waste remediation. In particular,
Aquaculture and Fisheries - plankton monitoring, harmful algal blooms, bacterial monitoring, new fish and shellfish feeds and the culture of marine bacteria;
Biomedical Marine Research: Drugs from marine organisms and marine biofilms especially those associated with antifouling.
Marine Food Processing and Waste Remediation: focussed on novel food technologies, marine oils, marine carotenoids and fishery waste by- products.
The Centre is funded through Enterprise Ireland and the FP7 KBBE Programme and has received €2.1mn in funding since 2006. The group has had over 50 peer-reviewed publications and has filed 2 patent applications since 2006. CAMBIO has also collaborated with over 35 aquaculture / fisheries companies across Ireland and Europe.
