The Instituto de Ecologia Litoral (Institute of Coastal Ecology) is a cultural Foundation, created in 1989, whose main function is to carry out the Scientific and Technical Studies in the marine and terrestrial coast, as well as the spreading of environmental values of our coast.
The IEL is dedicated to the research of:
a) marine flora and fauna (phytobenthos, marine phanerogamae, briozoa, decapod crustaceans, procordates, fish),taxonomy, ecology, biogeography;
b) classification of the coast line (bionomic cartography of benthos, environmental units, artificial reefs, marine reserves;
c) environmental divulgation and education (information, nature itineraries). The Centre is supported by the University of Alicante and the Local Government.
