organisation profile
- The Marine Conservation Branch is part of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC). It works in close cooperation with other JNCC branches (such as Coastal Conservation and Seabirds and Cetaceans) and also with the country agencies - English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage and Countryside Council for Wales. The main responsibilities of the Marine Conservation Branch falls into a series of key work areas which follow a natural progression from data collection through to dissemination of interpreted information and the provision of advice. These work areas are data and information (collection and management), setting common standards, research, dissemination, collaborative work and advice to Government and country agencies. This covers a wide range of interests, including baseline knowledge of marine habitats and their species, basic mapping of species distributions, the classification of habitats and communities, the conservation evaluation of habitats, communities and species, monitoring of change (natural and man-induced), a network of statutory sites, appropriate management or statutory mechanisms to achieve marine conservation, knowledge of effects of activities and pollution in damaging marine ecosystems, and general awareness and support (from public or non-specialists).
