organisation profile
- The Institute was founded in 1969 as "Laboratory for the Study of the Physical Properties of Biomolecules and Cells"; the present name "Istituto di Biofisica" was given to the Institute in 1981.
Since the mid-sixties, together with colleagues of a few other CNR research groups, the researchers of the Laboratory significantly contributed to get research in Biophysics started in Italy. This goal was achieved approaching and facing problems from an interdisciplinary point of view, also thanks to the common efforts of scientists with different cultural backgrounds (chemists, biologists, physicists).
Since 1969, the number of researchers has increased from 16 (9 CNR staff, and 7 employed by the University), to 25 (all CNR staff), and that of technicians and laboratory assistants from 10 (7 CNR staff and 3 employed by the University), to 22 (all CNR staff). Besides CNR staff members, University Professors, PhD students, undergraduate and graduated students, fellowship recipients work in the different research projects of the Institute laboratories.
At present the research themes of the Institute are: molecular and cellular biophysics, sensory biophysics, dynamic systems in biophysics, environmental biophysics, development of new methodologies and instrumentation for biological and biomedical studies. In all these fields, the different research groups have international scientific collaborations.
The annual ordinary budget of the Institute is provided by National Research Council (CNR, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche). Other funding sources have been, and still are, CNR Finalized and Strategic Projects, European Union Programs, International Cooperation Projects.
Besides research activity and instrumental development, the Institute has devoted its efforts to promote and organize Meetings, Congresses, Schools, NATO Advanced Study Institutes. All these have been occasions contributing to enlarge and strengthen scientific links with other research Institutions in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.
The recent reshaping of CNR collected five old organs generating the National Institute of Biophysics (IBF). The Institute, having its home place in Genova, includes four Sections localized in Milano, Palermo, Pisa and Trento, respectively.
