The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) is a comprehensive public university based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is a French-language university and is the largest constituent element of the Université du Québec (UQ), a public university system.
It offers a B.SC. in Earth and Atmosphere sciences with geology concentration, a Major in geology, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Science.
It hosts the Geotop Research Centre in Geochemistry and Geodynamics, founded in 1974 by researchers from the Earth Sciences department at UQAM and originally called the Centre de recherche en Géochimie isotopique et en Géochronologie. Geotop includes government partners and more than 50 professors-researchers from 10 Québec universities.
The University also hosts the ESCER Center (Étude et simulation du climat à l'échelle régionale, est. 2004), which acts as the climate regional modelling pole in the GEC3 (Global Environmental and Climate Change Centre) group composed of ~40 researchers from 4 Québec universities. The ESCER is also part of the Regional Climate Modelling and Diagnostics (MCDR) network with researchers from University of Victoria, a consortium named Ouranous and Environment Canada).
History
The university was founded in 1969 and its actual campus was built in 1979. The Department of Geology was also created in 1969 while the Atmospheric Sciences program was created in 1973. The two merged in the 1990s to yield the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department.
