organisation profile
- The Laboratory of Physics of Oceans (LPO) is a Mixed Unit of Research which associates CNRS and 2 laboratories of Physics of Oceans: that of IFREMER and that of UBO (University of Western Brittany), both located in Brest.
The LPO aims at proposing and carrying out research programs in Physical Oceanography intended to understand and model oceanic circulation.
These programs are based on theoretical studies, on numerical models, on analysis of historical data and on realization of sea cruises.
To take these measurements, various technics of ocean observation are implemented (hydrology, eulerian and Lagrangian courantometry, tomography).
Two major objectives justify the programs of the laboratory:
- a better comprehension of the dynamic mechanisms of general circulation, distribution of water masses and heat flows in the Atlantic Ocean;
- the role of the ocean in the dynamics of the climate (dynamic of the precursory mechanisms of the variability of the circulation).
4 research topics result from it:
- large scale circulation in the Atlantic;
- regional processes and water masses in the North-eastern Atlantic;
- the variability of thermohaline circulation;
- the study of oceanic turbulence.
