organisation profile
The research orientations of the Department of Microbiology and Phycotoxines concern mainly:
- the comprehension of evolution of enteric micro-organisms and the evaluation, in the long term, of sanitary risk for the man related to the consumption of shells contaminated by pathogenic micro-organisms;
- the structure and the origin of biotransformation of the microalgales toxins accumulables in marine foodstuffs. In term of sanitary microbiology, the major topics are related to:
- the study of the survival mechanisms of bacteria or resistance of pathogenic viruses in the sea;
- improvement of the detection of pathogenic micro-organisms : adaptation of the techniques of molecular biology;
- studies in situ concerning the contamination associated with the animal or human rejections;
- studies on the disinfection of used water before their rejection in the sea; - determination of the levels of exposure (evaluation of the risk).
For the study of phycotoxines, the selected topics are:
- internal and external factors affecting the toxinic production;
- research, insulation and identification of new toxins;
- the development of alternative tests (bioessais);
- the detoxification of shells (time of residence and localization of the phycotoxines).
The two research laboratories of this department give their scientific and technical support for the coastal laboratories, in particular for monitoring networks of the French coasts.
