organisation profile

BT (Marine) Ltd work in the offshore telecommunications field, laying and burying submarine telephone cables, as well as taking on other burial projects. Prior to laying cables, an electronic survey is carried out along the route to include bathymetry, sidescan sonar and sub-bottom profiles. This is followed by a Burial Assessment Survey, where a small plough-like tool is dragged along the proposed route, to simulate the burial itself. Data recorded includes penetration achieved, tensions recorded, pitch, roll and ship's speed. The results of these surveys are in most cases held by BT (Marine) Ltd. The data are actually owned by the cable owners or manufacturers, and in most cases BT (Marine) Ltd would have to request their permission before releasing any of this survey data.
