organisation profile

The Departamento de Estudos de Impacte Industrial (DEII) (Department of Industrial Impact Studies) is integrated in the area of Environmental Science and Technology of INETI - Instituto Nacional de Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial (National Institute of Engineering and Industrial Technology). Our main activity is carried out by applied research programmes and consultancy, essentially directed to assist industry in environmental issues. As an interface between the environment and industry the main objectives of the DEII are:

  1. assessment of the most appropriate technical solutions in order to harmonise the industrial development with the maintenance of natural quality standards;
  2. technical and scientific advice, to industry and other sectors of activity, in terms of pollution prevention and abatement;
  3. environmental auditing - preventive strategy;
  4. assessment of the ecological characteristics and vulnerability of natural systems; and
  5. information and environmental training.

Our fields of activity include: Environmental studies and information:

  1. environmental impact studies and risk analysis;
  2. ecological characterisation and evaluation of potential uses of ecosystems;
  3. environmental monitoring of receiving waters; and
  4. environmental auditing.

Environmental technology:

  1. characterisation of industrial wastes - treatment and valorisation proposals;
  2. pollution prevention and abatement - introduction to low waste technologies; and
  3. recovery of degraded areas.

Industrial uses of seaweeds harvest technological impacts. Information and environmental education. The multidisciplinary nature of the environmental studies is reflected in the Department's organisation: physico-chemical; microbiology; ecotoxicology; pelagic communities (phyto, zoo and ichthyoplankton); sedimentary ecology; demersal resources (fish and crustaceans); data analysis; system analysis; effluents and seaweeds.
