organisation profile

The museum was founded in 1739. The history of the museum is closely connected to the history of Sweden's famous explorers and scientists. The museum was until 1965 a part of the Royal Scientific Academy, but is now an authority under the Department of Culture. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has given the Museum the responsibility for national environmental contaminant monitoring on land, in lakes, at sea and in coastal waters of Sweden. The work is part of the National Swedish Monitoring Program, financed by SEPA, and done in collaboration with institutions for chemical analyses. Samples of tissues and organs, collected annually from sites in the National Monitoring Program, are prepared and stored permanently in the Environmental Specimen Bank at the museum. Data from the monitoring programs are continuously reported and published. These data are used to describe the state of the environment, estimate the threat of increased levels of contaminants in local/regional/global perspective, and to archive current information about the pollution status in relation to earlier situations. The results form the basis on which the authorities decide what measures must be taken to combat pollution.
