organisation profile
From January 1, 2008, Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, Kristineberg Marine Research Station and the research vessel Skagerak were combined to form a new infrastructure organisation within the University of Gothenburg, The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences.
Kristineberg Marine Research Station (KMRS) is located on the Swedish west coast in Fiskebackskil, 120 km north of Goteborg. The station was founded in 1877 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is now jointly run by the Academy and Goteborg University. KMRS is the largest field station for marine research in Sweden. It is also one of the oldest research stations in the world. Today it is one of Europe's most modern marine research laboratories with unique facilities for conducting experimental work and for keeping live organisms for prolonged periods. Kristineberg has a very active research programme that has attained a high international reputation. Present work is focusing on marine ecology and environmental research (eutrophication, ecotoxicology). Advanced underwater techniques are frequently developed and used at KMRS. The station also attracts many visiting researchers in medicine, morphology and chemistry. Two research vessels and scientific equipment are available in modern laboratories. Today, several scientists and Ph.D. students from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and from the department of Marine Botany and Marine Ecology at Goteborg University are permanently working at KMRS.
