The Danish Institute for Fisheries Research (DIFRES)
is a research institute within the Danish Ministry of Fisheries. The objective
of DIFRES's research is to produce information which can be used for
management of living resources of fish and shellfish in the sea.
DIFRES carries out research, monitoring and development and acts in an
advisory capacity on matters relating to fisheries, fisheries management, sea
ranching and the aquatic environment. DIFMAR actively participates in the
international cooperative research which forms the basis for the management of
the living resources of the sea. DIFMAR provides consultancy and educational
service, both in and outside Denmark.DIFRES is based in Charlottenlund Castle, 7 kilometers north of Copenhagen,
and has additional laboratories at the North Sea Centre in Hirtshals. DIFRES
operates one large research vessel, DANA, as well as smaller fishing vessels.
Other facilities of the institute include aquarium facilities, indoor and
outdoor tanks for experimental research, and laboratories for physical,
chemical, biological and hydrographical investigations.The department of Marine Ecology and Aquaculture carries out research regarding the interaction between environmental factors and the production and variability of fish and shellfish.
