IFREMER's Research and Technological Development (RTD) unit contributes to the technological developments necessary for the exploration and sustainable exploitation of the oceans and for monitoring the environment from the coast to the deep sea. It is composed of two laboratories and a department: the Laboratory for the Behaviour of Structures at Sea (LCSM) (research on the hydrodynamics of submarine craft and new offshore designs);
the Detection, Measurement and Sensors Laboratory (LDCM) (phenomena affecting the interfaces between materials and the marine environment);
The Marine Engineering and Instrumentation Service (SIIM) (equipment and instruments for observation, monitoring, in situ measurements and ocean sampling). Its fields of study include marine renewable energy; sea bed observatories; the behaviour of materials and structures at sea; the development of measurement systems and marine infrastructures.
