The connection with the University is achieved via the participation of Institute in study programs at departments of Biology, Geography and Earth Science (teaching, supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. projects) and by participation in Universities steering bodies (Senate, faculty council).
It has ca. 110 employees. Institute houses the Bird Ringing Centre, Herbarium of Latvia, Collection of Stock Cultures of Biological Agent Regulators of Plant Pest Populations, the Latvian Gene Bank of Cultivated Plants, and large Entomological Collection. The institute possesses several field research stations: the Engure Ornithological Research Centre, Ornithological Stations at Kalnaji and Pape, and Hydrobiological Monitoring Station on the Salaca River.

The Institute embraces 10 research laboratories: Animal Physiology, Bioindication, Botany, Experimental Entomology, Fish Hormone Biochemistry, Hydrobiology of Inland Waterbodies, Mineral Nutrition of Plants, Ornithology, Plant Genetics, Psychophysiology and 2 research groups: Genomics, Marine Biology

The research activities of the Institute has been involved in two main research directions:
I Investigation of natural resources and ecology with the aim to provide the theoretical bases for sustainable development of natural resources. The main specialities dealing with this research are:
- terrestrial ecology
- soil ecology
- freshwater ecology
- marine coastal ecology
- ornithology,
- entomology
- botany
II Bioregulatory mechanisms of vital process in plants and animals in relation to improvement of productivity. The main specialites dealing with this research are:
- genetics,
- biochemistry
- soil science
- animal physiology
- psychophysiology
The group of marine ecology presents data of coastal biodiversity, water chemistry, macrophyte ecology, marine protozoology, zooplankton, zoobenthos, heavy metal distribution in sediments, water and organisms
